All praise is due to Allāh, and may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon His Messenger Muhammad, his family, his Companions and all those who follow their path precisely. Indeed the best of speech is the Speech of Allāh, and the best of guidance is the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam). The worst of all affairs are the newly-introduced matters into the Religion for which there is no textual proof. Every newly-introduced matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance leads to the Hellfire. To proceed:

The noble Companion Abu Hurayrah (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) narrated that Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“There are seven who will be shaded by Allah, the Most High, in His shade on the Day when there will be no shade except for His shade:

  1. The just ruler;
  2. a youth who has grown up upon the worship of Allah;
  3. a man whose heart is attached to the Mosques;
  4. two men who love each other for the sake of Allah, they come together on that basis, and they separate from each other on that basis;
  5. a man who is invited by a beautiful woman of noble birth to sleep with her, so he refuses, saying, ‘Indeed it is Allah whom I fear’;
  6. a man who gives secretly in charity such that his left hand does not know what the right hand has given;
  7. and a man who remembers Allah in private and his eyes well up with tears.” (Al-Bukhārī no. 1423, Muslim 1031)

The Day of Resurrection is a long day, a day of fright, a day of terror, a day of grief for the unbelievers, sinners and disobedient among mankind and jinn. Allah warned us about this day throughout the ages and in all of the Revealed Books. Allah (the Most High) stated:

“To Him is the return of all of you―the Promise of Allah is true. It is He Who begins the creation and then will repeat it [by resurrecting you], that He may reward with justice those who believed and performed righteous deeds. But those who disbelieved will have a drink of boiling fluids and a painful torment because they used to disbelieve.” (Yūnus: 4)

Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“On the Day of Resurrection, the Sun shall be brought close to the people such that it will be from them the distance of a mile. The people will pour with perspiration according to their deeds. Some will stand in their perspiration up to their ankles, others up to their knees, others up to their waist and some will be bridled with perspiration.” At this Allah’s Messenger pointed towards his mouth to illustrate. (Muslim, no. 2864)

In this state of fear and this standing of terror, Allah will provide shade to these seven types of people. So let us ponder over these deeds of their’s that will bring about this safety and a tremendous reward.

Two believers who love each other for Allah’s sake

The fourth category of those who will be shaded on the Day of Resurrection will be two believers who love each other for Allah’s sake, they come together upon that, and they separate from each other based upon that. That is because the firmest handhold of īmān (faith) is loving for Allah’s sake and hating for Allah’s sake. Allah, the Most High, stated in His Book:

“O you who believe, whoever from among you turns back from his religion, [then know that] Allah will bring a people whom He will love, and they will love Him. Those who are humble towards the believers, stern towards the unbelievers, striving in the path of Allah, and not afraid of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allah which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, the All-Knowing.” (Al-Mā’idah 5:54)

This is from the traits of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamā’ah, who are the People of Hadīth and the Salafis: They are humble towards the believers, stern against those who turn away from the Deen and Sunnah, they strive in the Path of Allah seeking His reward and they do not fear the blame of the blamers.

These two men did not come together due to any blood or tribal relationship, or due to any worldly benefit. Rather, their coming together is due to their love for Allah, the Most High, and they are united for His sake until they are separated by death. They are the Strangers (Ghurabā) in these times who cling to the Sunnah and the Madhhab of the Salaf while those around them follow the paths of innovation and misguidance. That is because ahlul-bid’ah do not come together due to their adherence of the Sunnah―they gather in their various parties (ahzāb) and sects in opposition the Sunnah and the Sahābah. It is only the person of Sunnah and Salafiyyah who understands the importance of loving and hating for Allah’s sake, allying and disavowing for His sake and meeting, sitting and benefitting for His sake. They are kind and merciful to the creation and want the people to be guided to the truth and the Sunnah―they rectify the corruption they see around them and they do not fear the blame of the blamers nor those who oppose the people of truth or betray them. They are not concerned with gathering numbers or amassing wealth, they desire only the pleasure of Allah and His reward.

Abu Umāmah (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) narrated that Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“Whoever loves for Allah, hates for Allah, gives for Allah and withholds for Allah has surely perfected īmān.” (Abu Dawūd no. 4681. Al-Albānī declared it sahīh in Sahīh Al-Jāmi’ As-Saghīr, no. 5965.)

Ahlus-Sunnah spread the salutations of salām among the Muslims―to those whom they know and those they don’t know. Abu Hurayrah (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) narrated that Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“You shall not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not truly believe until you love one another. Shall I not direct you to an affair which, if you practice it, will cause you to love one another? Spread the salutations (as-salām) among yourselves.” (Muslim, no. 54)

So, this love is for Allah’s sake. Abu Mālik Al-Ash’arī (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) narrated from Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) that he said:

“There are people from the worshippers of Allah who are neither prophets nor martyrs, yet they will be the envy of the prophets and martyrs on the Day of Resurrection due to their rank in the sight of Allah.” The Companions asked, “O Messenger of Allah, inform us as to who they are.” He replied, “They are a people who love one another for the sake of Allah, without having any blood relationship between them, nor any exchange of wealth between them. By Allah, their faces will be light, and they will be seated upon pulpits of light. They shall not fear when the people are afraid, and they shall not grieve when the people grieve.” Then he recited this verse, “Behold, indeed for the allies of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Abu Dawūd, no. 3527. Al-Albānī declared the narration sahīh)

So this is a tremendous blessing, and it is this that brings the hearts together, such that the Muslims are merciful to each other, sympathetic to each other, help one another other and cooperate with each other upon righteousness and piety. And this goodness is established upon holding fast to Rope of Allah, and that is to hold fast to the Qur’ān and the Sunnah, and to the path of the Companions. Without this foundation, all attempts at unity and brotherhood are doomed to fail.

A man who is invited by a woman to fornicate with her

The fifth person who is shaded on the Day of Resurrection is a man who is invited by a woman to come and fornicate with her. She is no ordinary woman as the hadeeth mentions―instead, she has a high station in society and Allah gave her beauty, such that it is difficult for a man to resist her, and to ignore her appeal.

So how is one to save himself from falling into sin and immorality except with deep faith and taqwā, fear of disobeying Allah, the Most High. Qādī ‘Iyyād (rahimahullāh) said, “She was given rank and beauty, and that increased her appeal and made her a challenging acquisition. She gathered together the quality of beauty and rank, so she becomes even harder to resist when she invites him to come to her. In truth, she would not find any difficulty in achieving courtship and acceptance of her proposition. But he was patient in resisting what she called him to, due to his fear of Allah, the Most High. So she invited him to herself, and she was both beautiful and of high rank―and that is among the most perfect of traits in a woman. But the man gave precedence to Allah’s obedience, therefore Allah will shade him in His shade due to that. And the woman who possesses rank means that she is wealthy, of noble lineage and family.” (See Sahīh Muslim bi-Sharh An-Nawawī, 3/122, slightly edited)

Allah, the Most High, has said regarding the likes of this conduct:

“But as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure desires and lusts, then verily, Paradise will be his abode.” (An-Nāzi’āt 70:40-41)

Ibn ‘Umar (radiyallāhu ‘anhumā) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

While three men were walking, rain began to fall, and they had to shelter in a cave in the side of a mountain. But a big rock rolled over and blocked the mouth of the cave trapping them inside. They said to each other, ‘Invoke Allah with the best deed you have performed so Allah might remove the rock’. One of them said, ‘O Allah, my parents were old, and I used to go out to graze my cattle. On my return, I would milk an animal and take the milk in a vessel to my parents to drink. After they had drunk from it, I would give it to my children, family and wife. One day I was delayed, and on my return I found my parents sleeping, and I disliked to wake them up. The children were crying at my feet due to hunger. That state of affairs continued till it was dawn [until they awoke and I gave them their drink]. O Allah, if You regard that I did this deed for Your sake, then remove this rock so that we may see the sky.’ So, the rock moved a little.

The second said, ‘O Allah, you know that I was in love with a cousin of mine with the deepest love a man can have for a woman, and she told me that I would not get my desire fulfilled unless I paid her one hundred Dīnārs (gold pieces). So, I struggled for it till I gathered the desired amount, and when I sat between her legs, she told me to fear of Allah and not to sleep with her except by the right of marriage. So, I got up and left her. O Allah, if You see that I did this deed for Your sake, then remove this rock.’ So, two-thirds of the rock moved…” (A portion of a hadīth reported by Al-Bukhārī no. 2215,  Muslim no. 2743)

We ask Allah to make us from those who are under His shade on that day when there is no shade other than His shade.

And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of all creation, and may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and all his Companions.
