Abu Hamzah Ath-Thamāli said concerning Zayn Al-‘Ābideen ‘Alī Ibn Al-Husayn (died 95AH, rahimahullāh): “‘Alī Ibn Al-Husayn would carry a sack of bread on his back during the nights and hand it out as sadaqah and he would say: ‘Charity in secret extinguishes the anger of the Lord, the Mighty and Majestic.’”

‘Amr Ibn Thābit said: “When ‘Alī Ibn Al-Husayn died, they washed his body and they saw black marks on his back. Some of them asked: ‘What are these?’ It was said: ‘He would carry a sack of flour on his back at night and feed the poor people of Madinah.’”

The people of Madinah used to say: “The giving of charity in secret was not lost from us until ‘Alī Ibn Al-Husayn died.”

Hilyatul-Awliyā (3/145-136). ‘Ali Ibn Al-Husayn was a scholar of Sunnah and Hadīth, and the son of Al-Husayn Ibn ‘Alī Ibn Abī Tālib (radiyallāhu ‘anhumā). Al-Bukhāri, Muslim and the four books of Sunan narrated his hadīth. He died in 95AH, aged 54, rahimahullāh.
