The Imaam, the ‘Allaamah, Abdur-Rahmaan as-Sa’dee (1889-1956CE, rahimahullaah) said:

“Jihaad is of two types:

Jihaad by which is intended the rectification of the Muslims, rectification of their ‘Aqeedah (beliefs), their manners and conduct, and all of their religious and worldly affairs, and likewise their cultivation in terms of knowledge and action. This type of Jihaad is the foundation of Jihaad and its backbone – and upon this is built the second type of Jihaad, and the intent by this Jihaad is to repel those who transgress against Islaam and the Muslims, from amongst the unbelievers, the hypocrites, the heretics, and the rest of the enemies of Islaam and their oppositions.”

When you look at those misguided sects who speak of Jihaad in our times, you can see how far and distant they are from this understanding of Jihaad. The various sects of misguidance pay no attention to the Jihaad which is the foundation which calls to the rectification of the beliefs, manners, knowledge and action. Instead they talk of Jihaad upon innovated principles in opposition to the Book and Sunnah, and in opposition to the way of Sahaabah and those who followed their path. Those extremists and agitators who call for “jihaad” in our times are corrupted in their belief, corrupted in their fiqh, corrupted in their Manhaj, corrupted in their manners because they are not upon Salafiyyah – they are upon desires and innovations.
