Is the blood of a human or animal impure? Does it make any difference if it is a large amount pouring forth or a small bleed from a wound?

In the name of Allah, Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all creation, and may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and all his Companions.

The blood that flows forth from a human or an animal is considered impure. Allah said:

“Say: I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it is a dead animal or blood that flows forth or the flesh of swine for indeed, it is impure – or it is that which slaughtered in disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced by necessity, neither desiring it nor transgressing its limit, then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Al-An’ām: 145)

So, the blood that is impure is that which pours/flows forth whether human or animal. (Badāi’u-Sanā’i 1/61)

Ijmā’ has been cited upon this by Ibn Abdul-Barr (At-Tamheed 22/30), Ibn Al-‘Arabi (Ahkām al-Quran 1/79), Ibn Rushd (Bidāyatul-Mujtahid 1/83), Al-Qurtubi (Tafseer al-Qurtubi 2/221), An-Nawawi (Al-Majmoo’ 2/557), Ibn Hajr (Fathul-Bāri 1/352). Ibn Taymiyah stated that Imām Ahmad said: “Concerning blood, the people do not differ (that it is impure). As for vomit, they differ concerning it.” (Sharhul-‘Umdah 1/105). Ibn Hazm stated that blood is impure when it is plentiful (Marātib al-Ijmā’ 1/19).

Ibn Bāz sated: The blood of animals and humans is impure if it flows forth (plentifully). However, if it is a small amount that splashes on a person while he was slaughtering an animal or a small wound (on his body), then it is excused, in the most correct view of the scholars. In fact, that small amount of blood is found even in the meat that is eaten – so that does not harm and the food is considered pure; that is the blood that does not pour forth from the neck of the animal when it is slaughtered. So this small trace of blood is excused, it is just drops of blood – and this is the case also with the small amount of blood that comes from a person or animal due to a minor wound. (Nūr ‘alad-Darb).
