It is Disliked to Seek Ruqyah and Cauterisation ―Shaikh Al-Albānī. Many more than 70,000 will enter Paradise without Reckoning ―and the correct way of making Ruqyah

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Mughirah Ibn Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) said:

“Whoever seeks treatment by cauterisation or with Ruqyah, then he has absolved himself of reliance (At-Tawakkul) upon Allah.”

(Reported by Ibn Mājah no. 3489, At-Tirmidhi no. 2055, authenticated by Al-Albānī in Saheehah no. 244)

Note: Cauterisation is a medical practice or technique of burning a part of a body to remove or close off a part of it. It destroys some tissue in an attempt to mitigate bleeding and damage, remove an undesired growth, or minimize other potential medical harm.

The Shaikh, Al-‘Allāmah, Al-Faqeeh (the Jurist), Muhammad Nāsir Ad-Deen Al-Albānī (may Allah show him mercy) said:

In this hadeeth is a dislike of seeking cauterisation and ruqyah. As for cauterisation, then that is due to what it contains of torment by fire. As for ruqyah, then that is due to what it entails of seeking one’s need from someone else regarding a hoped-for but not a likely benefit. For this reason, leaving off these practices is from the qualities of those who will enter Paradise without reckoning. They are those who do not seek treatment by ruqyah, cauterisation, nor do they believe in evil omens, rather it is upon their Lord that they have reliance – as occurs in the hadeeth narrated by Ibn ‘Abbās and collected by Bukhāri and Muslim. Muslim (no.220) has an additional wording in his report:

“They do not perform ruqyah, nor do they seek ruqyah to be performed.”

This addition in this report opposes what is stronger than it (so it is shādh, weak), as I have clarified in my notes upon my book Mukhtasar Saheeh Muslim (no. 254).

The Hadeeth of the 70,000 who will enter Paradise without Reckoning

Bukhāri reported that Ibn ‘Abbās (radiyallāhu ‘anhumā) narrated to from Allaah’s Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi wassallam) that he said: “The nations were displayed before me, and I saw a Prophet with a small group of people (ar-raht: between three and nine), and a Prophet with one or two men, and a Prophet who had nobody with him. Then a large mass of people appeared before me, and I thought they were my nation. So it was said to me: ‘This is Moosaa and his people.’ Then I looked and I saw another great mass of people, and it was said to me: ‘This is your nation, and with them are 70,000 people who will enter Paradise, without reckoning and without punishment.’”

Then he stood and entered his home, and the people starting talking about the 70,000. So some of them said: “Perhaps they are those who accompanied Allah’s Messenger.” Others said: “Perhaps they are those who were born into Islam, and did not associate any partners in worship with Allah.” And they mentioned various other possibilities. Then the Messenger of Allah (salallāhu ‘alaihi wassallam) came out to them, and they informed him of their discussion. So he (salallāhu ‘alaihi wassallam) said:

“They are those who do not seek Ruqyah, and they do not get themselves cauterised or branded, they do not follow evil omens (and are not concerned by them), and they put their trust in their Lord.”

So ‘Ukkāshah b. Mihsan stood up and said: “O Allah’s Messenger! Supplicate to Allaah that He makes me from them.” So Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi wassallam) said: “You are from them.” Then another man stood up and said: “O Allah’s Messenger! Supplicate to Allaah that He makes me from them.” So he replied: “‘Ukkāshah has beaten you to it!”

There occurs in another narration collected by Ahmad, Ibn Mājah and Tirmidhi, from Abu Umāmah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wassallam) said:

“My Lord has promised me that 70,000 of my Ummah will enter Paradise without accounting and without being punished. Along with each thousand, another 70,000 will enter and then three Handfuls of my Lord.”

Ruqyah For Oneself

Ruqyah treatment is best done by a person on themselves through supplication to Allah, asking the One Who Cures, to cure you, the recital of Qur’an (that is a cure), by dhikr and glorification of Allah, and asking Allah (often) to remove the affliction, whether it be jinn, evil-eye, mental illnesses, disease, magic and so on. Reciting, making du’ā and ruqyah for yourself does not prevent you from being among the 70,000 who enter Jannah without reckoning, since You have not sought ruqyah from another person, and you have instead relied upon Allāh alone, seeking cure from Him directly.

Performing ruqyah on your children or family etc. does not contradict the narrations since they did not seek ruqyah from you — instead, you saw a need in them and volunteered to recite on them. So this does not remove a person from being from the 70,000 inshā’-Allāh, neither the reciter nor the one being recited upon.

Here are some portions of the Qur’an that should be recited regularly by the one seeking a divine remedy:

1. Surah Al-Fātihah:

2. Ayatul-Kursī

Jazak Allaahu Khair for the article. Very Beneficial.

My question is can one say these Du’a in English if they are not able to recite them in Arabic?
