Ibrahim Ruhayli refuted by Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Hādi for claiming that no one declared the Murji’ah al-Fuqahā to be innovators

Ash-Shaikh Al-`Allāmah Muhammad Ibn Hādī al-Madkhali (may Allah preserve him) said:

“And likewise with respect to the Murji’ah – and our speech concerning them has preceded. They are the ones who do not regard the actions to be from that which is termed as Imān. And they are of numerous sects and the worst of them are the Jahmiyyah; and the least in error of them are the Murji’at al-Fuqahā – none of them are from ahlus-Sunnah.

The worst of them are the Jahmiyyah who say: Imān is mere knowing [in the heart]; and the least in error are the Murji’at al-Fuqahā who say: Imān is belief in the heart and speech upon the tongue. They do not enter the actions of the limbs into the designation of Imān. They are the Murji’at al-Fuqahā. They are the least erroneous of the People of Irjā in the matter of Irjā. Yet alongside this they are not from Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamā`ah. We read to you the speech of Shaikh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullāh) wherein the Salaf rebuked them, refuted them and declared them to be innovators – and they were severe in their rebuking of them and in declaring them to be innovators.

Dr. Ibrāhim Ar-Ruhayli says: “There is no one who made tabdī` upon the Murji’ah al-Fuqahā.” With regret! So when Shaikh `Ubaid refuted him, he [Ruhayli] said: “Shaikh `Ubaid is not a specialist [in this field].” And yet this is his speech, and he is the [supposed] specialist! So I do not know if he is not a specialist, as he claims about Shaikh `Ubaid, then what will happen?! There will come about bizarre affairs and calamities.

So the Murji’ah are not from Ahlus-Sunnah. When it was said to Ibn al-Mubārak (d. 181H, rahimahullāh): “You are a Murjī’.” He replied: “The Murji’ah would not accept me. I say: ‘Imān is speech and action, it increases and decreases.’ They say: ‘Imān is speech and belief and not actions and they do not say that it increases and decreases.’ They do not accept me from the outset. If I went to them and said: ‘I am from you’, they would not accept me.” So how can you make them upon the madhhab of Ibn al-Mubārak whilst his madhhab is the madhhab of ahlus-Sunnah.”
